The Tanglewood Institute
If there’s one thing that can be considered as Lenox’s biggest claim to fame, it’s Tanglewood, a magnificent music venue and the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1937. Every summer, Tanglewood hosts what is regarded as one of the world’s premier summer music festivals, with acts drawing an audience from all across the country and beyond, making it a must-visit during your stay in the Berkshires.
In addition, for those who might be interested, Tanglewood is also home to three music schools that provide classes and courses during the summer months; the Tanglewood Music Center, Boston University Tanglewood Institute, and the Day in the Arts. While most of the programs are incredibly competitive and difficult to get into, they are among some of the best in the country. But who knows? If you have children who are musically talented, it may be worth applying and seeing what happens!
For the majority of us though, the biggest draw to Tanglewood is the summer performance season, with most taking place at the open-air Koussevitzky Music Shed with its massive lawns.
If you’ve never experienced Tanglewood before then you’re in for quite the experience. There’s nothing quite like gathering with some friends, relaxing out on the main lawn, enjoying a beautiful summer evening, and getting carried away by the enchanting sounds of the summer performances. From the beginning of July through the end of August, you’ll find performances taking place almost every night from Friday (sometimes Thursday) to Monday, so there’s bound to be at least one artist worth seeing during your time in the Berkshires!
Tanglewood and the main lawn are just a short drive away from downtown Lenox, right on the border of Stockbridge, and if you ask us, there’s really no better way to spend a weekend summer evening during your stay with us! Tickets for the acts tend to sell out quickly though, so be sure to check their performance schedule online well in advance and plan accordingly!
