Adams, Massachusetts
While often overshadowed by its neighbor, North Adams, Adams is a small town in the northern Berkshires with a bounty of natural and cultural attractions. Nestled in between the Hoosac Mountains to the east and the Mount Greylock State Reservation to the west, you’re never very far from exceptional hiking opportunities when visiting Adams!
The town’s biggest claim to fame is, of course, Mount Greylock, the tallest peak in Massachusetts at almost 3,500 ft above sea level. The mountain is one of the biggest draws to the region, and from the summit, you’ll be rewarded with views of the Green Mountains of Vermont, the Catskills of New York, and, if the weather is exceptionally clear, the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
There are several different trails that will take you to the summit, but the most popular is the 6 mile Bellows Pipe Trail, starting just west of downtown on Gould Road. Be prepared though, the trail is quite steep in some places, holding a rating of ‘moderate to strenuous’, and takes about 4 hours round trip for the average hiker.
But don’t worry, if you’re in no condition to manage the strenuous hike, you can always opt for the easy way and drive up to the top to take in the views!
Additionally, at the top of Mount Greylock you’ll find the lighthouse-resembling Veterans War Memorial Tower (with entrance to the tower being allowed on the weekends), and the Bascom Lodge hotel and restaurant. There’s nothing quite like sitting outside at the restaurant with a glass of wine, watching the sun slowly set over the Catskills to the west; it’s truly a magical experience!
Back in town though, Adams is home to a small, but lively downtown area, filled with restaurants, cafes, entertainment venues, and various mom and pop shops of all sorts. You’ll also find several historical landmarks, including the birthplace of American women’s rights activist Susan B Anthony, which is now a museum dedicated to her life.
For the perfect day in Adams, we recommend taking some time to explore the town in the morning and early afternoon hours. Then, when you’re fueled up and ready to go, make your way up to the top of Mount Greylock to enjoy the sunset and breathtaking views with a nice cold drink in your hand. Berkshires living at its absolute finest!
